Recording notes

E flat standard, as with most of Sabbath's early catalogue. This is the most upbeat thing on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath — a boogie riff rather than a doom riff — and Rick Wakeman guests on piano and synthesiser, which is why the second half sounds unlike anything else the band recorded. Iommi's fingertips were partly amputated in a factory accident and he wore homemade thimbles and used very light strings tuned down, which is the root of both his tone and his heavy vibrato: light gauge at low tension bends almost too easily. Keep the gain lower than modern metal instinct suggests, mids up, and let the riff swing rather than chug. Metallica covered this in 1998, which is how most younger listeners found it.

FAQ

Common Questions About the "Sabbra Cadabra" Tone

  1. What guitar did Black Sabbath use on "Sabbra Cadabra"?

Black Sabbath tracked "Sabbra Cadabra" on a Gibson SG Standard (released 1973). Pickup selector: bridge pickup on the guitar. The track is in E♭ Standard (E♭ A♭ D♭ G♭ B♭ E♭), so retune before you dial anything in.

  2. What amp settings does "Sabbra Cadabra" need?

On a Super Lead: Gain 6.5, Bass 5, Mid 7, Treble 6.5, Presence 6, Volume 7. Each value is on the standard 0–10 amp scale; match them on your amp first, then nudge to taste. ToneMirror can translate these positions for whatever amp you actually own.

  3. Can I play "Sabbra Cadabra" without a Super Lead?

Yes. ToneMirror takes the original recipe above and adapts it to your guitar, amp, and pedals - so you can chase the "Sabbra Cadabra" tone on a Katana, a Helix, a tube combo, or anything else. The translation accounts for EQ curve, gain structure, and pickup type so the result actually sounds like the record, not just the same knob numbers on different gear.
