Recording notes

Standard tuning. Built the way the whole album was built — as interlocking single-bar loops layered on top of an Afrobeat-derived groove rather than as a chord progression — so the guitar part is a short repeating cell that never develops. Play it exactly the same every bar; the variation is meant to come from the other instruments. The tone is very clean, extremely bright and heavily compressed, with the pick attack forming the rhythmic content. Adrian Belew's guest lead is the exception, a treated squealing line closer to a synthesiser than a guitar. Recorded 1980 at Compass Point in the Bahamas and Sigma Sound in New York with Brian Eno. Keep the gain near zero and the low end out of the way.
