Self-produced and self-released on Moment of Truth. Zach Rishel plays the lead - sparse, bent single-note answers soaked in amp spring reverb - while Drew Nix covers rhythm underneath, so it is two guitars, not a layered single part. Key of E, standard tuning, 8-bar bluesy progression. Get most of the grit from a loud clean amp pushed into edge-of-breakup rather than a pedal. Rishel's touring amp is a 1968 Fender Super Reverb and his guitars are Fayland T- and S-styles; neither is confirmed for the 2022 session, so this is an era-accurate reconstruction.

FAQ

Common Questions About the "Wondering Why" Tone

  1. What guitar did The Red Clay Strays use on "Wondering Why"?

The Red Clay Strays tracked "Wondering Why" on a Telecaster (released 2022). The Fender Standard Telecaster named above is a modern equivalent, not the guitar on the record. Pickup selector: bridge pickup on the guitar. Tuned to standard (E A D G B E).

  2. What amp settings does "Wondering Why" need?

On Fender '65 Super Reverb Reissue: Gain 4, Bass 5, Mid 6, Treble 7, Presence 6.5, Volume 5.5. Each value is on the standard 0–10 amp scale; match them on your amp first, then nudge to taste. ToneMirror can translate these positions for whatever amp you actually own.

  3. Can I play "Wondering Why" without a Fender '65 Super Reverb Reissue?

Yes. ToneMirror takes the original recipe above and adapts it to your guitar, amp, and pedals - so you can chase the "Wondering Why" tone on a Katana, a Helix, a tube combo, or anything else. The translation accounts for EQ curve, gain structure, and pickup type so the result actually sounds like the record, not just the same knob numbers on different gear.

  4. What effects are on "Wondering Why"?

The recording has spring reverb on it. No source names the unit behind it, so this page doesn't guess one. ToneMirror maps each effect onto your rig - a pedal you own, your amp's own controls, or a block on a modeler - and says plainly when your rig can't make one.
